Latin Quarter

Latin Quarter Since the Middle Ages this riverside quarter has been dominated by the Sorbonne, and acquired its name from the early latin-speaking students. It dates back to the Roman town across the Ile de la Cité. The area is generally associated with artists, intellectual and a bohemian way of life; this is mainly due to the thousands of students that live around.
But the place also has a history of political unrest: In 1871, the Place Saint Michel became the centre of the Paris Commune, and in may 1968, it was a site of student uprising.
Today the eastern half has become sufficiently chic, however, to house members of the French Establishment.
The place contains many of the Paris monuments, museums and gardens, ranging from the brand-new Institut du Monde Arabe to the Middle Ages Musée de Cluny, or the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in the Jardin des Plantes.

The Marais district spent a long time as a swamp and then as agricultural land, until in 1605 King Henry IV decided to transform it into a residential area for Parisian aristocrats. He did this by building Place des Vosges. Today, the arcades around the Place des Vosges are occupied by expensive galleries and shops, and cafés filled with people drinking little cups of coffee and air-kissing immaculate passersby.

Bastille Day Celebrations in Paris

Bastille Day (14th July) is the most important national holiday in France. It commemorates the storming of the former high-security prison (Bastille) and the uprising that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. During the evening before the big day, people dance in the Bastille square and at numerous balls that are organised around the city. On Bastille Day itself, crowds watch a huge military parade led by the President along the Champs-Elysées. The partying continues all day and in the evening there are fireworks at the Trocadéro. Also many bars and clubs have their own celebrations in the city. Every village, town and city in France has their own celebrations for Bastille Day with fireworks, street fun and partying, so wherever you go there will be a festival atmosphere.

Autumn Festival

If you're visiting Paris in Autumn make sure you visit the Autumn Festival, the highlight of the Parisian cultural calendar. During the four months the Festival includes opera, theatre, dance, performing arts and film, and incorporates more high-powered arts events than some other cities see in a year.

Paris Fashion Week

Paris' Fashion Week takes place in Autumn and in Spring. It is based at the Carrousel du Louvre and the new catwalk trends are displayed in shows which include fashions from designers including Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. Admittance is reserved for fashion professionals only.
